Istanbul*

Istanbul!

Vibrant!

Colorful!

Noisy!

People!

Alive!

Colorful buildings...everywhere!

Fishing from the bridge...

Silver ware...

The Turkish people are very religious.

Nougat!

Spices!

Every color you can imagine...
shelf on shelf on shelf!

Every crafters' dream shop! :-)

You walk hill up and down...little street up
and little street down...you do no know where to look!
It is overwhelming! Love it!

They stock stacks of everything you can think of!
Those of you who love markets...you'll go crazy!

I say 'fly little bird, fly!

Wher' you're going?

Breathtaking beautiful mosques

Traditionally Turkish apple tea...
part of their culture is to sit and drink tea
from these gorgeous little glasses

On the river cruise we passed a cemetery with
hearts everywhere!

random thoughts*

Today is the day.

I've been sitting around with 5 different posts in my head.  When I want to write, I think it does not add value, then I leave it.

These posts were a few things that happened in my life, then the realization came, which I already knew. They also say that the realization can only happen when you already know it from within  - which is fabulous! So here they go:

1. Living in another country is difficult for me. Not being surrounded by my family and friends, is difficult. I struggle.  Moving here, I decided that I'm just going to breath through everything, in the end 'everything will be ok'.  It does not feel ok.  I'm coping, but I'm unhappy.

2. With breathing through everything, I have stopped living who I am.  Everything happening with or around me, was thought of as a learning curve, something I needed to learn in my life.  I'm impulsive from nature and love just getting up and doing things. I love talking and chatting and laughing, but since living here I've stopped doing any of it, because of fear of what people are going to think of me. They are different, I have to adapt to their way of living which is absolute kadoodles. I realised I've been stopping myself from expressing who I am, living what I believe in, stopping myself 'thinking i have to learn something'.  You learn through doing and being..not by waiting and seeing. (aha!)

3. another post I was going to write would have started something like this:
'I'm quiet, but loud.
I'm reserved, but open.
I'm shy, but confident.
I'm a lover of people, but they have to reach out to me as well.
I'm consistently trying to please others, but really wanting to only please myself. (?)
I'm impulsive, but responsible.
I love to take care of people, but haven't done that in a year.
I'm a hard worker, but feel as if I have not done anything this past year.
I'm an avid reader of anything, but feel too guilty to sit down and read.
I'm constantly aware of the sacrifice we made to come here, continuously looking for what we are suppose to learn through all this.
I'm happily married, blessed to the ends of the world.

Within all these words I realised that I'm not living who I know I am. I'm constantly taking a step back, scared of stepping on anybodies toes. I'm tired of living like this. It's too much hard work.

4. My life came full-circle last Thursday evening. At college we had to divide into groups and do an exercise. You get a piece of paper with columns on with headings e.g. color, food, animal, furniture, vechile and you have to take your group members and write down the first thought of color that you associate A with.   You also had to give reasons for you choice. This exercise was to hear how others see you.

K said for animal she chose parrot and monkey - my first thoughts were I talk too much! She explained she was looking for a animal that is free-spirited, then she thought of a bird flying, and which more beautiful bird to be than a parrot which is colorful and bright as well. The monkey was for always taking care of people xx. my eyes just welled up with tears, and I realised full circle!

Growing up I could never express who I was because I used to stutter so badly that I could not even say my name.  I always had this idea in my head, this voice telling me who I am, but what other people said about me and how they reacted towards me, was something different.  I remember thinking 'but that is not me, I don't do that'..but because I could not talk, I would just accept it and retrieve. Thinking everybody else must know better than myself. Still, my inner voice was  much stronger and I knew I was different to what they thought.

Going to university when I was 19 was great. No-body knew me, nobody knew I stuttered, nobody had any expectations of me, I could just be myself. I'm proud to say I got my diploma with honors, I was the class representative of 300 students and I did not stutter once.

It was funny. When I was with my fellow students and friends, I could be me. When I was with my old school friends, relatives and family, the stutter returned. It was as if I lived 2 separate lives. Working in London in 1999 and 2000 brought back all the uncertainty and the stutter came back - because I wanted to impress people I don't even care about.  In May 2001 we returned to South Africa and I decided I'm going to do what is going to make me happy and that is teaching. In 2003 I opened my nursery school (with the whole family against my idea!), but luckily I have some of my mom's stubbornness, and it is still today a successful story!

Ever since, I believe I have been true to myself in every way possible.  When I'm with people who wants to be with me, I am me.  I think I have to teach myself how to be myself with others as well.

Which brings me to the next post which was going to be something like this:

Jenny stops me in my tracks.  I don't have anything to complain or moan about. I don't have anything to worry about. I have every possible reason to feel happy and great!

Jenny always stops me right in the mids of my thoughts...but I know that my feelings and thoughts and my life is real to me. Please pray for Jenny xx

Coming back to myself... even though I want to have all these attributes of friends, I know I am only myself. I may already have some of these qualities, but, thinking about the difficult road I walked within myself to be where I am today, (and of Jenny), I don't have time to waste trying to be someone I am not.

I am who I am.
I am living this wild and precious life I have.
I'm not waiting until we are back in SA.
I'm alive today.
I'm living now.
I know who I am.
I know what makes me happy.
I don't need anything else - I have everything right here, within my heart! xx

Happy living!

PS: With this post I'm honoring M3, for he has been next to me with every step of my journey, believing in who I am, in who I want to be. Trusting that I know myself, loving me for me. I love you!

rhythm*

"don't think...feel the rhythm"

Monday evening we had a drumming circle.
18 drums.
17 women of all ages.
1 soft hearted, gentle guy with a lot of soul.

We were playing the rhythms...
he gets up and bend down on his knees,
using his hands to show us to play softer...

"close your eyes...
breathe...
don't think...
feel the rhythm..."

that is all there is to life.
close your eyes...
breathe...
don't think...
feel the rhythm...xx

Pangkor (part 2)

In April M3 went to Malaysia for work. He asked if I would like to join him for a few days?
Join him for a few days? He must be joking!

On my list of 101 things in 1001 days, nr. 1 is "go somewhere where it requires a passport".
Nr. 8 says " leave my city once a month, leave my country once every 3 months".

I was dreaming...and planning...for travelling...seeing....smelling...hearing...experiencing!
Here is part 1.We went to Pangkor Island for a few days...below is part 2.

We went around the island by taxi.  Most of the people live on the beach and make their living from fishing.  They live in stilt house on the beach...looking at their way of living you realise how simplistic and basic their lives are...wondering what you are doing?
Fish, whether dried or fresh, are displayed in every shop.  The smell of the dried fish took me instantly back home, where we eat 'bokkoms' - dried fish. The eating of bokkoms is a tradition in my family. We would sit on the stoep, my dad with his pocket knife, with the 3 of us around him, watching how he carefully clean the dried fish and cut off little pieces for us.  I did not really like the taste of it (it tastes exactly like what it smelled)...but the anticipation, the sitting and watching, the looking how carefully and precise he cleaned it, the togetherness with him, the stories he use to tell while we were waiting, the ritual,  was worth the taste.

Back on Pangkor Island.  The local form of transport is scooters.  My heart gave a double beat when I saw this man on his scooter, with his wife behind him, both wearing helmets, but their little boy, sitting in front of him without any protection on. Breath....
The buildings on Pangkor Island are bright and colorful with many photographic opportunities around every corner. (the reason for the postings in parts :-)

Town centre - small, packed, busy, colorful, HOT!

Life on Pangkor Island are laid back and relaxed. I think with the excess heat and humidity you don't really have a choice to how you spend your days.  Most people will sit on their scooters talking over this and that like in this photo. The man on the red bike delivers packages.

Bright and colorful! Their taxi rank.

"He's a real Nowhere man/Sitting in his Nowhere Land/Making all his Nowhere Plans for nobody,/Doesn't have a point of view,/Know's not where he's going to,/Isn't he a bit like you and me?"
John Lennon quote

mystic whirling dervishes*

One of these beautiful days I will post about the rest of our holiday in Malaysia...I would also love to post photos of gorgeous and vibrant Istanbul, but the SUN! and the BIRDS! and the giggles of children, the barking of the dogs, and villagers walking and chatting is calling me to come play outside!

Today I feel overwhelmed....which is difficult to write about, as it is part of life.  It is about people being heartless, people whom I know, some that I don't and my head cannot get around how heartless some people can be to others. I always bring things back to myself and ask myself how I would have acted in such a situation. I seems not many people are open to just being human and loving towards their neighbors....I don't know... the extent of it all is too big at this moment.

So I choose to concentrate on the positive things in my life right now.  I'm sure I'll come around to write about all these things, but for now, I'll leave you with a little piece of Istanbul...
for me the most precious!

The last evening of my visit we went to have dinner at this restaurant, which had a program with all things traditional Turkish e.g. belly dancing.

When we went to sit down, the waiter came around and put a South African and Turkish flag on the table, representing the countries we come from. M3 and I looked at each other and we knew how touched each of us felt. I could see the tears well up behind his eyes and new how much his country and being South African means to him. I knew how much he missed his country... our families and friends.  The Turkish people made  us feel special, acknowledged and welcome in a country that is not even our own.

The most special/spiritual thing for me was the dervish dancer. The 'sema ceremony' represents the human being's spiritual journey and they bring it in the way of Rumi, the great Muslim mystic and poet.  It is like a meditation....I watched how this dancer twirled...in my mind I was twirling with him...to wherever it was I was at that specific moment in time.
Just by closing my eyes....I'm there twirling with him again...

round and round and round....

and round and round and round....

I end off with a beautiful poem of Rumi...which is bit rebellion from my side...but I love it! (the rebellion and the poem!)

There are many guises for intelligence.
One part of you is gliding in a high windstream,
while your more ordinary notions
take little steps and peck at the ground.

Conventional knowledge is death
to our souls, and it is not really
ours.

It's laid on. Yet we keep saying
that we find "rest" in these "beliefs".

We must become ignorant
of what we've been taught,
and be, instead, bewildered.

Run from what's profitable and comfortable.
If you drink those liqueurs, you'll spill
the springwater of your real life.

Distrust anyone who praises you.
Give your investment money,
and the interest on the capital,
to those who are actually destitute.

Forget safety.
Live where you fear to live.
Destroy your reputation.
Be notorious.

I have tried prudent planning
long enough. From now
on, I'll be mad.

2 questions*

I've been back in the 'sunny' UK for 4 days and life feels perfect!

The sun is shining!
The birds are singing louder!
The children are laughing harder!
My heart feels lighter!
My eyes are open and seeing!

I've decided, that when my mind starts racing about all things yesterday and my soul starts dreaming bigger and wilder dreams...to just stop...breath...and think about what am I doing right this very minute.

This minute is absolutely perfect. Just as it is.

Together within this moment...
M3 returned home from Turkey,
I took an afternoon nap instead of doing the washing, (it was fabulous!)
The sun was shining...it was actually HOT!
I'm mezmorizing on memories made in Malaysia and Turkey...on which I still want to post photos...shortly!
My sister and her husband are moving back to South Africa on Tuesday...

M3 came home tonight and watched The Bucket List on the plane. In the movie they say there are only 2 questions you have to answer in your life before you die...

1. Are other people happier because of you?
2. Are you happy with your life?

So, are you?

"Oh! The summer night has a smile
of light, and she sits on a sapphire".
  - Throne -

Good  morning Beautiful you,
It's a beautiful day.
The birds are singing.
There is a breeze blowing through the trees.
My heart is overflowing with gratitude and love...
for life...for each of you...for the beauty that is in every moment!

Closing my eyes, I'm walking between millions of people,
every one talking and smiling,
some get so excited!

Hearing the birds singing outside, it brings me back to right now....

Five years ago I read the book 'Unconditional Love' by Ed & Deb Shapiro. It changed my life instantly.
I lost a friend who have been next to me for 6 years, through starting to love myself again.
It says: "Opening the heart means softening to the beauty and wonder in each moment.  It begins by acknowledging and accepting yourself with honesty and courage, it is being a true fiend to yourself."

Just wondering....are you being a true friend to yourself?
